2023 Modern Home Design Trends

Trend #1 - Mellow Earth Tones

Soft earth tones encourage the serenity many homeowners want.

A recurring theme you’ll notice in many of the modern home designs of 2023 is an emphasis on serenity and natural peace.

Many of the trends on this list try to connect the design of the home with nature, thereby encouraging a mellow environment. This first trend of emphasizing mellow pastels and earthy colours is a great example of that more general design push.

An important part of colour design is that it can’t be achieved solely through furniture. If the furniture doesn’t match the room, it will never look right.

That’s why it’s worth taking your time to consider the shades of paint, the colour of trim, and the look of the floors as you plan your custom home; so that the home you build is the perfect setting to fill with your chosen furniture.

Many custom home companies will work closely with you as you explain how you want your home to turn out. After all, it’s your home, so it should fit your preference.

Trend #2 - Natural Materials

Natural materials can wow your guests and will look great in pictures.

Even though the modern farmhouse trend has been around for a while, the incorporation of natural materials like wood, stone, and rustic metals has endured as a desirable choice to finish both interiors and exteriors.

First off, wood. There’s a reason why every decade of custom modern home design keeps using wood grain to various effects: it’s one of the few materials that seemingly never goes out of style.

Recently, woodgrain features have been augmented with stonework and even metal framing, allowing houses to feel more earthy while retaining all their comfort.

As in the pictures above, natural materials are usually placed or aligned in very deliberate ways so that they stand out from their environment. In a way, the natural materials are themselves the most interesting features of many modern home designs.

Just remember that some natural materials have specific cleaning needs, especially when indoors. Craggy stone fireplaces can collect copious dust, and wood can stain or get scratched if not finished or cleaned properly.

Trend #3 - White Kitchens

Nothing says “bright and clean” like a wash of white.

You may be able to guess one of the prime factors behind the rise in popularity of white kitchens - white often evokes purity, order, and cleanliness, and all of those are properties that everyone wants for their kitchen.

There are many benefits of a dramatic white colour scheme:

  • It emphasizes the natural light coming in through the windows;

  • Dirt, grime, or stains stand out on white, and while this might at first seem like it flaw, it makes blemishes easier to notice and clean;

  • White looks excellent with stainless steel appliances, wooden floors, and stylish metal handles and taps.

White kitchens are a classic choice that can be packed with personality once you fill them up.

If you take lots of pictures in your kitchen, white paint also makes a great backdrop for photos, and there are so many ways to spruce the space up to achieve different effects.

Trend #4 - Bold Accent Colours

It’s important that the accent colour stands out from it’s surroundings.

Alongside the Earth Tones from the first trend is this related, complementary modern design trend: bold accent colours.

If your home is constructed with a consistent design, as most homes are, it will naturally develop its own aesthetic feel. However, there’s a risk that a home’s design can be too consistent to the point where it no longer stands out.

One way to take a drab design and liven it up, to catch the eye of the observer, is to make use of bold clashes of colour.

The colour may come from a door or countertop, from the clash between the colour of the walls and their trim, or from accessories like awnings, pillars, or swings.

It’s best to avoid overuse of accent colours or the design could feel overwhelming. However, tasteful, controlled splashes of colour can make your home beautiful, bold, and fun.

2023 brings many exciting new paint trends you can research to help you decide on an accent colour. In particular, rich blues are being revealed as an especially tasteful choice.

Trend #5 - Stone Countertops

The right shade of countertop can complete a bold room design.

Continuing the earthy theme is the enduring popularity of well-crafted stone countertops.

Stone countertops are wonderfully satisfying features to have in your home because they are:

  • Ruggedly durable and can last for years

  • Easy to clean

  • Gorgeous both as centrepieces of a kitchen or as stylish features of a bathroom

  • Available in many tasteful colours

Common materials include marble, quartz, and granite, and even among those few options there are multitudes of diverse colours, patterns, and feels.

You can get a rich grey counter to match the iron look of your kitchen, or a soft pink to brighten up the room.

You can even find stone-topped coffee tables and furniture if you want to continue the look throughout your house.

Trend #6 - Bathroom Accents & Floating Vanities

The shower, floor, tub, and vanity each contribute to a beautiful bathroom.

All the trends mentioned above can be incorporated into the design of your home’s bathrooms: earth tones, natural materials, or even accent colours.

Normally, bathrooms don’t need to be as exciting to look at or be in as the other rooms in your house, as the bathroom is not where people will spend the majority of their time socializing. However, because it is such a necessary room, it should still be designed with intention.

A recent trend that’s taken off is “floating” vanities. This means that the vanity cabinet that often holds sinks or mirrors doesn’t have legs, but is instead directly connected to the walls.

This effect streamlines the feeling of the room and eliminates clutter. It even doubles as a convenient storage space.
