5 Custom Home Master Bedroom Tips

Think through what you want your custom homes master bedroom to be like

1. Make Your Master Bedroom Large Enough but Not Too Large

When designing your custom home, you might be tempted to make your master bedroom too large and then regret not using that extra space in another area of your house. However, you should make sure that it is large enough to accommodate all of your furniture comfortably and that you have enough room to easily walk around.

Here are some other things to consider when deciding on the size of your master bedroom:

Sitting Area? You might be tempted to add in a sitting area and that is a great idea if you are going to use it, but if you won't use it then it might just end up being wasted space.

Closet Size? Also, think about how large you want your closet(s) to be. Do you want to have enough space to actually get dressed in your closet?

En-suite Size? Finally, consider the size of your en-suite. Do you want a separate bathtub and shower area? If you don't take baths, then you might decide on only having a shower or vice versa.

2. Decide on an Effective Layout for Your Sleeping Area, Closet, and En-Suite

Most master suites in a custom home have an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. It is important to carefully think through the placement of these and choose a design that makes the most sense for your situation.

Here are some things to consider when you are choosing your layout:

Connect the Bathroom & Closet? Would you like the bathroom and closet to be connected so that you can easily come out of the shower and get dressed without having to cross your sleeping area or would it make more sense to have them separate?

Soundproofing? You might want to make sure that the bathroom walls are soundproof and that light from the bathroom can't reach your sleeping area so that you don't disturb your partner if you have to get up at night.

Two Closets? Maybe two closets would work better than one so that you can have your own separate space for storing your clothes and accessories.

Extra Storage? Should you also make extra storage for your towels and bedding so that they are easily accessible or would you like to incorporate storage for them in the bathroom?

Space for Your Pets? If you have pets that sleep in your room with you, you might also want to plan a special area for their beds.

3. Choose a Location for Your Master Bedroom that Will Maximize Your View

The Collingwood, Blue Mountain, or Clearview region is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in Ontario. If you have a property for your custom home that is surrounded by beautiful views, think carefully about how you can get the most out of them.

Here are some things to think about when choosing the location of your master bedroom:

Location and Size of Windows? Take a good look around your lot and decide what you would like to look at every morning when you wake up or every evening when you retire for the day and try to situate your master bedroom windows accordingly. Choose windows that are large enough to take in as much of the scenery as you want.

Multiple Views? You might also want to have your master bedroom located in a corner of your custom home so that you can have windows on both sides and be able to enjoy two different views.

Sunrise or Sunset? If you enjoy watching the sunrise as you wake up in the morning, then you might want to have one of your windows facing east. Conversely, if you prefer to lie in bed as the sun sets, a west-facing window may be more to your taste. If you love the view to the east but you don't want bright sunshine in the morning, you can always invest in room darkening window treatments.

4. Decide on What Level You Want Your Master Bedroom

If you are building a custom home with more than one level, you will need to think about what level you want to have your master bedroom on. The following are some things to think about when deciding on what level to put your master bedroom:

Climbing Stairs? If you don't fancy the idea of climbing stairs every night to go to bed, you might choose to put your master bedroom on the main level.

Peace and Quiet? Main-level bedrooms can be nice, especially if they are located away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of your home.

Small Children? If you have small children and their bedrooms are upstairs, it might not be practical to be that far away from them.

Patio or Deck? If you would like to have the option of directly enjoying the outdoors from your master bedroom, you might consider adding a deck if it is on the second floor or a patio if it is on the main floor.

5. Think Carefully about Lighting and Power Outlets

You will want to think carefully about where you place your light switches and electrical outlets in your custom home. Here are some suggestions to help you make the right choices.

Convenient Light Switches? You should have light switches not only next to your door, but also within easy reach of your bed so you don't have to get up and turn out the lights once you are all tucked in for the night.

Dimmer Switch? A dimmer switch is also a nice feature so that you don't have to go from pitch black to a bright light if you need to get up while it is still dark outside.

Sufficient Outlets? You also shouldn't skimp on electrical outlets. Make sure you have enough in your room, especially close to your bed for plugging in phone chargers and night lamps.
