Customized home Ontario: Things to consider before you build

Customized Home Ontario: Questions to Consider

A customized home has the great advantage of being the exact home that you have always wanted. However, in order to get the perfect home for you, you will need to take some time to think through exactly what you want your customized home to be. This includes the style, the layout, the size, the location and anything else that is really important to you.

Here are some important considerations that you should think through before you begin to build.

1. Where do you want to build your home?

Where you decide to build your home is very important as it can affect how you feel about the final result just as much as the actual design of your home. Here are some things to consider when you are choosing your location:

Rural vs Urban:

Do you want your home to be in a quiet, more remote location or would you prefer to be in or close to a city or town?

Would you prefer to live in the country or somewhere less remote?

Amenities:

How close do you want to be to amenities such as shopping, gyms, restaurants, and hospitals?

Children:

If you have or are planning to have children, do you want to be close to good schools and do you want a property that has plenty of space for them to play outside?

Size:

Would you prefer a small lot that is easy to maintain or a larger one that you can have fun landscaping? You also want to make sure that your lot is the appropriate size to fit the design of your home.

Pets:

Do you need outdoor space for your pets and would you want the backyard fenced in for their safety?

Water:

Would you like a waterfront property, pool, or both?

2. What style of home do you prefer?

There are many different styles to choose from for your custom home. If you aren't sure which style you prefer, take a look at as many different styles to get a better idea. Here is a general description of 3 of the most common styles to help you:

Traditional:

A traditional home takes its inspiration from historical designs. They usually have a formal dining and living room as well as striking features like large stone fireplaces and front porches.

Modern:

Modern homes are quite distinctive and minimalistic with their clean lines and large open floorplans. You will notice that there will be lots of extra space around the furniture and architecture in a modern home which allow them to "breathe".

Contemporary:

Contemporary homes are similar in style to modern ones in that they are also quite simple in their layout, however, they tend to be more trendy and fashionable, taking inspiration from what is in style when they are designed.

3. How many bedrooms do you want?

When deciding on the number of bedrooms you want to have, take into consideration how many people there are in your family, if each person needs their own room, and if you want extra space for overnight guests.

You may also want to consider whether or not you should include a "granny flat" if you may be taking care of elderly parents in the near future.

4. Do you want more than one level?

Think about how many levels you want in your home. The following question may help you think that through:

  • Do you mind climbing stairs or would you like to have everything on one floor?

  • Are stairs a problem for any of your family members?

  • Would you like your laundry room to be on the main level or in the basement?

  • Do you want to have at least one bedroom on the main level?

5. What size and types of rooms do you want?

The room distribution size is also something to carefully consider. For example, you may really want a larger kitchen so that you can have the whole family cook together or it may be more important to you to use that extra space to have a larger dining room for entertaining.

If either you or your spouse works from home, then you may require sufficient office space. Or you might want your home to be smaller so that it is easier to keep clean. Do you want a garage and if so how big do you need it to be?

6. How Can You Find a Custom Home Builder You Can Trust?

Planning out your custom home is only part of the process. You also need to find a custom home builder you can trust to build your home exactly the way that you have imagined it. Before choosing your builder, you should do the following:

Get Recommendations:

Ask family and friends for recommendations of trusted builders that they have worked with before. A personal reference is probably the most reliable and it will give you a good idea as to the builder's quality of work, professionalism and cost.

If you don't know of anyone who has built a custom home in your area, you can also check online reviews for local builders.

Meet with the Builder:

Talking face to face with your prospective builder will give you a chance to see if this is a company that you can work with. It will also give you the opportunity to ask questions such as:

• How many years of experience do you have?

• Do you offer a warranty on your work and what does it cover?

• Do you have references from previous customers? Can I contact them?

• Are you licensed and insured? Can I see your credentials?

• Will you provide detailed estimates?
